The 12 Steps of AA

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) outlines a 12-step program to help members achieve and maintain sobriety. The steps aim to motivate members toward positive change across Louisville, Kentucky.

1. Admitting Powerlessness: Admitting that one is powerless over alcohol and that life has become unmanageable.
2. Believing in a Power Greater Than Oneself: Coming to believe that a power greater than oneself can restore sanity.
3. Turning Will and Life Over: Deciding to turn one’s will and life over to the care of God, as understood.
4. Making a Searching and Fearless Moral Inventory: Making a searching and fearless moral inventory of oneself.
5. Admitting Nature of Wrongs: Admitting to God, oneself, and another human being the exact nature of one’s wrongs.
6. Becoming Ready for Removal of Defects: Being entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly Asking for Removal of Shortcomings: Humbly asking God to remove shortcomings.
8. Making a List of Persons Harmed: Make a list of all persons harmed and become willing to make amends to them all.
9. Making Direct Amends: Making direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
10. Continuing Personal Inventory: Continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admit wrongs.
11. Seeking Spiritual Awakening: Seeking through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out.
12. Helping Other Alcoholics: Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other alcoholics and practice these principles in all affairs.
