African Regional Council for Mental Health

The African Regional Council has hired Petronella Ntambo Mayeya to run its Canadian-sponsored project for the development of mental health associations in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. She will also work on planning for a proposed regional conference in Uganda. She is based at the ARC office in Lusaka, Zambia.

Ms. Mayeya has an undergraduate degree in psychology and a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Zambia . She has been employed as a psychologist since 1981. She was a program officer for the Zambian Red Cross Societys Street Kids Program in 1996-97 and has considerable experience in working with children. She was recently a co-principal researcher for a study of the prevalence of child abuse in Zambia. She is active in a number of organizations and is currently the national secretary of the Mental Health Association of Zambia.
