Dear WFMH Members and Friends,World Mental Health Day – October 10 – is fast approaching. The theme for this year is a continuation of the one on integration of physical and mental health from last year, with a specific focus on the relationship of mental health with chronic physical illnesses.A position that the World Federation for Mental Health is promoting in international forums is the need for inclusion of mental health in the emergent and growing emphasis being given to non-communicable diseases. Mental health is intimately tied to the Millennium Development Goals. As these goals are reformulated, we are trying to ensure that mental health is prominently represented. The burden of mental illnesses is well documented. This year we are underlining the intimate and bi-directional relationship between mental illnesses and chronic physical illnesses including diabetes, cancer, heart disease, respiratory diseases, and obesity.WFMH is developing a program – the Great Push for Mental Health – to ensure that mental health is given priority in all countries. The connections between physical and mental illnesses, and the relationship between these illnesses and human productivity and mortality, are key to such prioritization.Attached are materials we have developed to support your efforts and initiatives to celebrate World Mental Health Day. Translations in eight languages are under way, but constraints make it difficult for us to assure that they will be available by October 10. We apologize for the inconvenience. We hope these materials prove useful. The prioritization of mental health remains an ongoing challenge. The World Federation for Mental Health established World Mental Health Day to provide an international vehicle for public education. Now we are starting several new initiatives to develop and build the future of mental health everywhere. To access the 2010 World Mental Health Day Material, please click here Sincerely,Vijay Ganju Secretary General/CEO World Federation for Mental Health |
