I
do appreciate your hard working and effort you are putting through on the
preparation and dissemination of WMHDay Educational
Materials.
The
message that I would like to put across is that, I have already filled in the
Report Form that has some questionnaire to be answered and I have mailed it you
through regular airmail. However, I’m afraid I would not be able to meet the
deadline which is January
27,2005
,I have decided to answer question number four ( see below) separately and send it through an
e-mail.
I’m
a WFMH member , working with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare here in
Zanzibar Tanzania as a Mental Health Programme Coordinator , besides that I’m
also Deputy Secretary for an NGO called ”Help The Mentally Ill In Zanzibar” (
SWAZA) which is working hand in hand with the Ministry every year during the Commemoration of
WMHDay.

Psychiatric
patients’ day out visit to *Maruhubi Palace Ruins and *Kiwengwa beach
village.
|
*Maruhubi ruins is one among the
Zanzibar historical site,
built by the then Sultan Seyyid Barghas to house his harem, dated back in
1800’s.
*Kiwengwa
village is in the northern coast of the Zanzibar
island, about 60km from city centre, a tourist attraction with beautiful
beach. A combined team of patients and hospital staff played a football
match with the host.

of environment at Kidongo
Chekundu

Hospital
|
Beside
patients and hospital staff this event incorporated NGO’s and members of
the general public and officiated by the Deputy Minister of Health and
Social Welfare Honorable Sultan Mugheiry.

Radio
and Live TV Programme
|
This was a panel discussion on subject matter and
other issues pertaining to mental health services in Zanzibar and other
specific issues on WMHDay, audiences has had time asking questions through
telephone conversation. Both Ministry and SWAZA staff presented
it.

Chekundu
Mental
Hospital
was established back in 2003 by NGO’s Young Artist Association ( ZAYAA )
in collaboration with SWAZA, they are voluntarily providing the services
to patients. The World Health Organization ( WHO) Liaison Officer in
Zanzibar Dr. F. Zawaira was the Guest of Honour in this event. She
stressed the involvement of mentally ill people in community productivity,
praised ZAYAA and SWAZA for their initiatives and donated
100,000/=

shillings ( $100) for the
maintenance and procurement of painting stuff.

Performance
of local Ngoma troupe to patients at
Kidongo
Chekundu
Mental
Hospital.
|
Local
Ngoma troupe provided a live performance to patients at
Kidongo
Chekundu
Mental
Hospital,
which is the main institution which provide in and out patients services
for psychiatric patients in Zanzibar.
Regional Commissioner Urban West was the Guest of Honour in this event.
Special designed T- shirts for the occasion were distributed to the
audiences including patients. Patients couldn’t hold their breath and
found themselves dancing to the tune.

Training
workshop to service providers’ and members of the community on WMHDay in
Unguja and Pemba
islands.
|
This
is a one day training workshop which was sponsored by WHO Tanzania which
took place in Unguja and Pemba
islets and involved health services providers and general public, issues
relating to mental health and HIV/AIDS, diabetics and hypertension were
discussed. Topics presented by Dr. Adulwakil Idris , a retired psychiatrist and SWAZA chairperson and other
physicians.

Production
Of Special Designed T-shirts
|
About
320pcs of Special designed T- Shirts were produced and distributed to
patients and members of the general public, this was sponsored by WHO
Tanzania.

8.
|
Delivery
of speech by Minister of Health and Social Welfare Zanzibar to press and
local TV channels on WMHDay.
|
The
Minister of Health and Social Welfare Zanzibar Honorable Salim Juma Othman
gave out a press release and also appeared on the local TV explaining to
the public on WMHDay 2004.
