~World Mental Health Day Report 1999~
Participants at the HealthExpo event in Dallas, Texas
WFMH arranged a World Mental Health Day program at HealthExpo, a health exhibition aimed at the general public and the largest event of its kind in the United States. The exhibition was held at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Activities included distribution of a special information packet; depression screening and bio-feedback; video presentations created by the Carter Center, Levi Strauss and the World Health Organization; poetry readings by a local performance group of consumers; and an exhibit of art from local consumers. Brochures and pamphlets on various subjects were distributed. The materials most in demand were on: women and depression, the elderly and depression, and brochures produced in Spanish.
The volunteers who helped to make the event a success included people from the Mental Health Association in Texas, the Mental Health Association of Greater Dallas, the Texas Mental Health Consumers (special thanks to Mike and Jo Halligan), and a number of WFMH Board members and staff (Beverly Long, F. Patt Franciosi, David Robinson, Richard Hunter, Elena Berger and Debbie Maguire). Two local WFMH members, Ms. Anna Gray and Ms. Janet Paleo, provided outstanding assistance.
