Founded in the 1950s, Narcotics Anonymous now has over 70,000 meetings worldwide. The program is based on the 12 steps and 12 traditions, providing mutual support for recovering addicts.
The 12 Steps of NA
Narcotics Anonymous (NA) is a 12-step program that provides support for people recovering from drug addiction. The 12 steps aim to guide members to accept their addiction, surrender to a higher power, self-reflect, make amends, and help others in recovery.
- We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.
- We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
- We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
- We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
- We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
- We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
- We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
- We made a list of all the people we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
- We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
- We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong, promptly admitted it.
- We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
NA chapters across South Dakota work to provide a supportive community for those recovering from drug addiction. Members aim to help and motivate each other through the 12-step program to enact positive change in their lives.
Getting Started with NA in South Dakota
Use the meeting search on wfmh.org to find local meetings in your area. Both in-person and online/virtual meetings are available in most places across the state.
Attending Your First Local NA Meeting
South Dakota offers both open and closed NA meetings:
- Open meetings welcome anyone to attend, including those new to recovery or just learning about NA. These are good meetings to start with as a new member.
- Closed meetings are only for those who identify as addicts. These meetings offer a more intimate setting to share for those working through recovery.
Arrive early to your first meeting and introduce yourself as a new local member. Share your experiences if you feel comfortable, but just listening is also perfectly fine. At your first meeting, you’ll likely receive a welcome keychain tag marking 30 days clean. Additional key tags are given out at milestones like:
- 60 days
- 90 days
- 6 months
- 9 months
- 1 year
- 18 months
- Multiple years
The color and design of the keychain tag differ with each milestone, serving as a tangible reminder of the progress you’ve made in staying clean and bettering your life through NA.
