The 12 Steps of NA
NA (Narcotics Anonymous) is a nonprofit fellowship for recovering drug addicts. Its approach involves working through 12 steps to achieve and maintain sobriety. The 12 steps are:
- We admitted we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable. This step involves honestly assessing one’s lack of control over drug use.
- We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity. This step asks members to open themselves to faith in a higher power.
- We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him. This commits members to spiritual growth and guidance.
- We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves. This step leads to deep self-reflection and understanding of one’s own flaws.
- We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. This continues the self-reflection by sharing with another person.
- We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. This step speaks to preparing oneself for growth and change.
- We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings. This asks God for help in the recovery process.
- We made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all. This begins the process of making things right with people who were hurt.
- We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. This acts on the previous step but avoids causing further harm.
- We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it. This makes self-reflection an ongoing habit.
- We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out. This pursues deeper spirituality and understanding of God’s will.
- Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. This step calls on members to help others in their recovery once they have gone through the steps themselves.
The 12 steps aim to motivate NA members toward positive change in their lives and relationships with others across Missouri. The steps build self-awareness, spirituality, and service to help members maintain their sobriety.
