The 12 Steps of NA

NA (Narcotics Anonymous) is a nonprofit fellowship or society of recovering drug addicts whose primary purpose is to help addicts stop using drugs. NA outlines a 12-step program to recovery that focuses on developing spiritually, personally, and relationally. The 12 steps are:

  1. Admitting that one cannot control one’s addiction or life.
  2. Coming to believe in a power greater than oneself that can restore sanity.
  3. Making a decision to turn one’s will and life over to God/Higher Power.
  4. Taking a searching, fearless moral inventory of oneself.
  5. Admitting to God, oneself, and another human being the nature of one’s wrongs.
  6. Becoming ready to have God remove all defects of character.
  7. Asking God to remove shortcomings.
  8. Making a list of all persons harmed and becoming willing to make amends.
  9. Making direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admit when wrong.
  11. Seeking through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood.
  12. Carrying the NA message to other addicts and practicing these principles in all affairs.

NA chapters across Maine seek to motivate members to take these 12 steps to facilitate positive change in their lives and relationships.
