In Memoriam
Douglas Deane
WFMH lost one of its staunchest longtime supporters with the death of Douglas Deane at the age of 90 in Geneva on 14 August 1999. Doug, an Australian by birth, was an experienced international worker, having served since 1933 in UN agencies, international schools, the World Council of Churches and the World Alliance of YMCAs.
From 1965 he directed the Geneva office of the Pathfinder Fund concerned with family planning, population problems and women’s health. He became a member of WFMH in the early 1960s, jointed our representative group to WHO and UN Geneva in 1968, and in 1979 became our sole representative in Geneva.
After Stanislas Flache became our Geneva representative in 1983, Doug remained active and involved in our affairs well into his eighties. He was, indeed, a key WFMH person in that very important international arena.
Doug is survived by a large family of children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces as well as his wife Alice who may be reached at 9A Plateau de Frontenex, CH-1208 Geneva, Switzerland. Donations in his honor may be made to WWF Suisse, 1214 Vernier, Switzerland (ccp 12-50008-4); or to the RAF Benevolent Fund, c/o RAFA, 1218 Geneva, Switzerland (ccp 01-2548-7).
