Goals of the Human Rights Committee
The goals of the Human Rights Committee are to promote and defend the rights, dignity and autonomy of persons with mental illness or at risk of such illness, to improve their mental health care, and to improve their environment.
These goals shall be accomplished through dissemination of knowledge and information, by discussion, education, training, networking, support of individuals and communities, the use of media, and collaboration with other organizations in the area with similar goals.
Objectives:
1. To advocate for the human rights of persons with mental illness;
2. To disseminate UN Mental Health Principles, the World Mental Health Report, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and other related documents;
3. To plan, draft or assist in the preparation of declarations, guidelines or other national or international documents on the human rights of persons with mental illness;
4. To investigate, identify and report on the abuse of the human rights of persons with mental illness;
5. To devise a system of monitoring the implementation of human rights principles and practice;
6. To educate and support the families of mentally ill persons and promote their participation in human rights enforcement;
7. To educate and support those working with the mentally ill in any professional capacity about human rights issues;
8. To collaborate with WFMH Regional Vice Presidents regarding human rights priorities in each region;
9. To educate, in order to preempt the psychosocial sequelae of human rights violations;
10. To coordinate with other human rights organizations pursuing similar goals;
11. To compile a bibliography of all documents related to mental health and human rights;
12. To establish a clearinghouse for related human rights organizations.
