Mental health disorders emerging during childhood and adolescence account for a substantial proportion of the global mental health burden. Approximately half of all adult mental health conditions have onset before the age of 14, making early detection and intervention among the highest-yield priorities in global mental health policy. The World Federation for Mental Health designated youth mental health as a core theme for World Mental Health Day 2020.
The WHO World Mental Health Report 2022 estimated that one in seven adolescents globally experiences a mental health condition, with depression, anxiety, and conduct disorders among the most prevalent. These conditions frequently go undetected and untreated, producing significant impairment in educational attainment, social functioning, and long-term wellbeing across affected populations.
The World Federation for Mental Health calls for the scaling of school-based mental health programs, which research published in The Lancet Psychiatry (Weare and Nind, 2011) has shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression while improving resilience. School settings offer unique reach, enabling large populations to be served through existing infrastructure without additional access barriers.
Adverse childhood experiences — including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction — are strongly associated with elevated risk of mental disorders in later life. WFMH supports the integration of trauma-informed approaches into child health and educational services, recognizing the enduring neurobiological and psychological effects of early adversity on development.
The World Federation for Mental Health WFMH stresses the urgent need for youth-friendly mental health services that are accessible, confidential, and non-stigmatizing. Peer support programs and age-appropriate digital mental health tools have demonstrated promise in increasing help-seeking among young people. Governments and health systems must invest in these approaches now, before conditions escalate into chronic, treatment-resistant illness.
