APA Award to Secretary General Brody
Eugene B. Brody, M.D., received the Human Rights Award of the American Psychiatric Association at the 43rd APA Convocation of Fellows in Washington D.C. on 17 May 1999. The citation read “in recognition of outstanding contributions to human rights and mental health throughout the world.”
The award recognized Dr. Brody’s early advocacy for the rights of mentally ill people, as expressed in his pioneering psychotherapy with people classified as schizophrenic and his active role in desegregating the Maryland public mental hospitals. The APA noted his advocacy on behalf of refugees, and for women’s reproductive rights. The citation also referred to his role as President and then Secretary General of WFMH.
