The 12 Steps of AA
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) outlines a 12-step program to help members achieve and maintain sobriety. The steps aim to motivate positive change through accepting powerlessness over alcohol, appealing to a higher power, and making amends.
- Admitting inability to control alcohol use alone.
- Believing in a Power greater than oneself that can restore sanity.
- Making decision to turn one’s will and life over to God’s care.
- Taking moral inventory of oneself.
- Admitting to God, oneself, and another human being the wrongs in one’s inventory.
- Becoming ready to have God remove all defects of character.
- Humbly asking God to remove shortcomings.
- Making a list of all persons harmed and becoming willing to make amends.
- Making direct amends to such people where possible, except when doing so would injure them or others.
- Continuing to take personal inventory and promptly admitting when wrong.
- Seeking through prayer and meditation to improve conscious contact with God as understood, praying only for knowledge of God’s will and the power to carry that out.
- Carrying the AA message to other alcoholics and practicing these principles in all affairs.
